Quick facts:

  • Adobe integrates generative AI capabilities from Firefly into Substance 3D Sampler and Stager
  • New Text to Texture and Generative Background features allow creating textures and environments from text prompts
  • Aims to significantly accelerate 3D workflows for designers, artists, and creators across industries

Complete story

At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2024 today, Adobe unveiled new features powered by its Firefly generative AI technology integrated directly into the Substance 3D design suite. The updates to Substance 3D Sampler and Substance 3D Stager aim to accelerate traditionally time-consuming 3D texturing and staging tasks for industrial designers, game developers, and VFX artists.

The marquee additions are Text to Texture in Substance 3D Sampler and Generative Background in Substance 3D Stager, both leveraging Adobe’s Firefly AI, which we’ve already tested in Photoshop. Text to Texture allows users to generate realistic or stylized textures for 3D objects from simple text prompts, bypassing the need for photography or sourcing stock imagery. Generative Background enables the creation of detailed background scenes via text prompts, with intelligent lighting and perspective matching when compositing objects into the scene.

“By integrating Firefly’s generative AI capabilities into Substance 3D, we’re streamlining the creative process and unlocking new realms of possibility, designed to empower human creativity rather than replace it,” said Sebastien Deguy, VP of 3D & Immersive at Adobe.

The new generative features could significantly accelerate traditional workflows across multiple creative industries. Designers can rapidly iterate on textures and environments, marketers can produce high-fidelity product visualizations faster, and the time and cost savings extend to gaming, VFX, and more.

Content generated with Firefly will include attached “Content Credentials” providing transparency around the AI’s involvement, powered by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) standards.

Beta versions with the new capabilities are available to Substance 3D subscribers starting today. Adobe positions the updates as part of its commitment to pushing digital creativity forward through AI-powered innovation.
