Adobe unveils new AI tool for generating and editing custom audio

Adobe has previewed an early prototype of a new AI-powered tool for music and audio generation. Dubbed Project Music GenAI Control, the technology allows users to generate original music simply by providing text prompts.

Unveiled at the Hot Pod Summit in Brooklyn yesterday, Project Music GenAI Control represents a major step forward from existing AI audio generation systems. While tools like Google’s MusicLM can produce music from text, Adobe’s tool goes further by integrating editing capabilities into the same interface.

After generating audio using text prompts like “happy dance” or “sad jazz,” users can refine the AI-created music by adjusting parameters like tempo, intensity, structure, and repeating patterns—all without switching to dedicated audio editing software. Sections can be remixed, song lengths extended, and customizable loops created. The tool can even transform the music based on a reference melody provided by the user.

According to Nicholas Bryan, Senior Research Scientist at Adobe, this fine-grained editing control brings AI audio generation to the “level of Photoshop,” providing a kind of “pixel-level control for music.” By generating and editing music within the same workflow, the tool could help podcasters, video creators, and other content producers quickly create customized audio that matches their needs.

Adobe says Project Music GenAI Control was developed alongside researchers from the University of California, San Diego, and Carnegie Mellon University. While an early prototype, the tool represents Adobe’s ongoing efforts to expand AI-powered creativity across mediums.

The company responsible for Photoshop has been investing heavily in AI, using its generative models to produce over 6 billion AI-generated images to date. Adobe says it remains committed to developing such technologies responsibly, in line with its AI ethics principles around accountability, transparency, and safety.

Project Music GenAI Control is the latest preview of Adobe’s experimental projects and its potential future integration into flagship Creative Cloud apps like Premiere Pro and Audition. For now, details remain scarce and no public release date has been set. But the tool signifies growing momentum around AI’s potential to augment human creativity across image, video, and now audio production.
