Should I Choose Monthly or Yearly?

Whether you choose the monthly or yearly plan depends on how long you plan to use Canva and whether you’re just testing it out or committing to it long-term.

  • Choose monthly if you need Canva for 9 months or less. It’s ideal for short-term projects and those who want to get a few things done or test whether Canva Pro is right for them.
  • Choose yearly if you need Canva for 10 months or longer. This plan is suitable for those who want to use this tool for longer and save 16% compared to the monthly plan.

Who Should Get Canva Pro?

If you need a simple and inexpensive graphic design tool together with unlimited downloads of stock photos, you should definitely get Canva Pro. Although it’s very inexpensive, Canva Pro is also great for high-budget teams because it offers many collaboration tools.

But if you need advanced tools and premium stock photos, we don’t recommend Canva Pro. In this case, you should get Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, which will give you professional tools, and Adobe Stock, which will supply premium stock images. However, these tools will cost you $50+/month, which is much more than Canva’s $9.99–$12.99/month.

How to get Canva Pro for free?

As of November 2022, there are three ways to get Canva Pro for free—with the 30-day free trial or by being a student, teacher, or nonprofit organization.

1. Free trial

A free trial is available with Canva Pro regardless of whether you pick a monthly or yearly plan. You are also free to cancel the trial anytime, and if you cancel before it expires, you won’t be charged.

Here’s how to get it:

  1. Go to Canva.com.
  2. Click the purple “Sign up for free” button.
  3. Create a Canva account.
  4. Confirm the free trial.

2. Education (teachers and students)

Canva Pro is free for primary and secondary school teachers and K-12 students and teachers, and it’s called Canva for Education. To get Canva Pro for free as a teacher or student, you need to get verified by Canva’s team. You can do this by signing up with a verified educational email domain or uploading a scanned copy of an approved document.

But, for now, Canva for Education is not available to universities, public libraries, private schools, preschools, and nonprofit organizations unrelated to education.

3. Nonprofits

Canva for nonprofits is available to all registered nonprofits, social impact organizations, and public health organizations. To apply for it, you must supply required documentation that varies between countries, but you can find more information in the Canva guidelines.

What do you get with Canva Pro?

Canva Pro is famous for many features that enhance and simplify your workflow while being super cheap. Here we point out the most important aspects of it:

1. Image Editor

Canva’s Image Editor is widely popular because it’s straightforward to use (you grab and move elements with your computer mouse) while also being very powerful. In the video below, we showcase how to use the drag-and-drop editor.

Using the drag-and-drop feature to replace an image quickly

Despite its simplicity, the Image Editor is packed with basic and advanced features, including adding shadows, using dozens of special effects, animating designs, creating video intros and GIFs, and lots more.

2. Unlimited access to 110+ million stock images

Stock photos can be expensive since even the smallest subscriptions at stock agencies can cost three times as much as the Canva Pro subscription, which gives you unlimited access to all 110+ million stock photos, vectors, and illustrations for free.

Unfortunately, its selection is not as broad as Shutterstock’s, so we keep another source of images at another stock agency when Canva fails to deliver. But if you don’t use as many pictures as we do or if you’re not too picky, Canva might be enough.

3. 650,000 professional templates

Canva’s templates are an integral part of designs and give Canva its distinct advantage over other design platforms. For each type of content you can create with Canva Pro, such as flyers, social media posts, and marketing designs, there are plenty of professionally-made templates that you can use to create a stunning graphic quickly.

You must pick a template, change the text to fit your narrative, apply your branding kit (colors, fonts, logo), and then download or schedule from within Canva.

4. Background remover

There are many standalone programs for removing backgrounds, but you get a background remover for free with Canva Pro. It’s straightforward to use—you select an image and click “Remove Background”, as we did in the following video.

Using background remover in Canva Pro

It works best when there’s a distinct background and subject. However, you can use a brush to correct the removal if something goes wrong. Though we must admit that if the background remover doesn’t do a fine job, fine-tuning it is exceptionally time-consuming.

5. Other Canva Pro features

Above, we pointed out only the most notable Canva features, but there are a lot more, like:

  • Simplified branding with Branding Kits.
  • Resize any project even after it’s finished.
  • 1TB of cloud storage.
  • Scheduling on eight social media platforms
  • 24/7 customer support.
  • Thousands of fonts.

Is Canva Pro worth it?

In short, yes. Canva Pro is affordable considering the number of features, tools, and resources you get for just $9.99/month. That could cost you up to $100 per month or even more elsewhere.

For this reason, Canva Pro is worthwhile for anyone who wants to create beautiful graphics without prior graphic design experience.

While you can use the free version, it’s much more limited, especially in photos, cloud storage, and templates. You can also create good graphics with the free version, but it will take much longer, and they may never be as good as the ones you can create with Canva Pro.

Who should get Canva Pro?

Because it is such a versatile tool, it is suitable for many groups of people. In general, Canva Pro is ideal for anyone who wants to create graphics inexpensively. Here is who we recommend Canva Pro for:

Entrepreneurs: Canva is ideal for anyone who inspires themselves, as it supports the creation of social media posts for all the major platforms that entrepreneurs are typically active on. Plus, you can schedule posts for free without buying an expensive standalone scheduler.

Website owners: We know how expensive it is to hire graphic designers and that it’s even more frustrating when they do not deliver the desired results. Because Canva Pro is affordable and easy to use, you can create most graphics in minutes, and they’ll look just as good.

Students or teachers: Since Canva Pro is free for students and teachers who often need a good graphic design platform to teach or make their work more attractive, we recommend giving it a try. After all, it’s a free resource with images and templates that we all need.

Beginners: If you are starting, we recommend trying Canva. It does half the work for you, rather than diving into a complex tool like Adobe Illustrator that you’ll get lost in and probably abandon quickly. It’s a great way to learn graphic design by using and analyzing the work of other professionals.

Marketers are rarely good designers, but they know what a graphic should look like to attract more customers and sales. With Canva, you can easily create promotional designs or get an overview of a team of designers.

Creative Teams: Canva Pro is incredibly affordable for teams but has extensive tools to support team collaboration. It also provides the team leader with a modern dashboard for assigning tasks and roles while taking care of publishing and branding.

Those who need stock photos on a small budget. Even if you do not need designs, Canva Pro is an excellent resource for stock photos since you can download unlimited from its database of over 110 million stock photos, vectors, illustrations, and even videos.

Canva Pro Team pricing

Canva for Teams costs slightly more than Canva Pro at $14.99 per month, but up to 5 people can use it at no extra cost. You must pay for additional team members if you want the Canva for Teams for over 5 people.

Here’s what the pricing looks like:

Number of team membersCost
Example pricing of Canva for Teams

In other words, Canva for Teams costs $14.99 per month for up to 5 team members. For every additional team member beyond that, you pay an extra $14.50.

In 2022, Canva replaced the previous Enterprise plan with the Teams plan, dedicated to teams. Previously, teams had to use the Enterprise plan, which cost $30/month per team member and was too expensive for most startups.

Canva Pro vs Canva for Teams

The main difference between Canva Pro and Canva for Teams is that Canva Pro can be used only by a single person. Canva for Teams has a few unique features, such as assigning tasks and roles, branding controls, team reports and insights, and creating your own branded templates.
